IB MATH SL 1
IB Math SL Y1 course info
This course caters for students who already possess knowledge of basic mathematical concepts, and who are equipped with the skills needed to apply simple mathematical techniques correctly. The majority of these students will expect to need a sound mathematical background as they prepare for future studies in subjects such as chemistry, economics, psychology and business administration.
There are six compulsory core topics:
- Algebra
- Functions and Equations
- Circular Functions and Trigonometry
- Vectors
- Statistics and Probability
- Calculus
In addition there will be an internal assessment – Mathematical Exploration. This is a piece of written work that involves investigating an area of mathematics.
The course will be assessed internally through tests, quizzes, and an independent mathematical exploration, and externally through written examinations. The Mathematical Exploration requires each student to pursue an independent mathematical investigation on a topic of his/her choice. These projects allow for independent mathematical development without the time constraints inherent in written examinations.
All students enrolled in an IB subject must sit the external exam at the end of Year 2. Students are required to purchase a TI 84+ calculator, which is available through the school.

ACS Cobham HS grade categories and weights
All IB Math Higher courses at ACS will use the following grade category weighting:
- Tests 60%
- Assignments 30%
- Quizzes, homework 10%
- IB assessment information
External assessment: 80%
- Paper 1: 40% 1.5 hour non-calculator exam
- Paper 2: 40% 1.5 hour exam on core topics, calculator required
Internal assessment: 20% — Mathematical Exploration
Other information
Tests
Tests will be given at the end of each unit. A student who is absent on the day of a test will be expected to make up the test within five school days of his/her return to school. Failure to do so will result in the final semester grade being marked as Incomplete, and additional work may be required before the student is permitted to make up the test.
There is no test re-take opportunity for students.
Quizzes
Quizzes will generally be given once or twice per unit to check your progress with new concepts.
Homework
Homework will be assigned every day and its completion is essential to the learning process.
Extra Help
If you are in this class, you are used to doing well in mathematics. Nevertheless, if you are having trouble with anything we are working on in class, you are encouraged to see me for extra help. Often a little extra time when a problem first arises can help prevent bigger problems from developing later on.
Feel free to contact me by email if you have any questions or concerns.
I am looking forward to teaching this class, and to a challenging and rewarding two years of IB Math SL!
